| A search committee to select a new head for the Indiana University Alumni Association (IUAA) has been formed and IUAA’s John Hobson has been named interim president and chief executive officer by IU President Myles Brand.
Jerry Tardy, president and CEO, who had led the IUAA for more than 14 years, died Sept. 7. Hobson, who earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education from IU, has worked for the association since 1973. Since 2000, he has served as senior vice president and chief operating officer. In that position, he directs the 115 clubs in the alumni club program, serves as liaison to IU’s regional campuses and supervises the IUB program staff. From 1994 to 2000, he was associate executive director. He had earlier served as director of alumni relations for the IUB campus and alumni director for the IPFW, IU Kokomo and IU East campuses.
A 10-member search committee, chaired by J. Terry Clapacs, IU vice president for administration, met for the first time Oct. 24. The committee, appointed by Brand, includes three former IUAA volunteer leaders: Dr. Clarence Boone of Gary; Richard Searles of Indianapolis; and Patrick Shoulders of Evansville. The current chair of the association, Lynn Lewis of Clarksville, is also a member. Other committee members include Frank Otte of Indianapolis, a former student member of the IU Board of Trustees; Curt Simic, president of the IU Foundation; Sue Talbot of Bloomington, an IU trustee; Bette Davenport, director of student activities and alumni relations at IU East; and Sara McNabb, executive assistant to Brand. Clapacs said the committee hopes to complete its work in January.
