The Alliance of Distinguished Rank Professors held its annual dinner meeting on the IUPUI campus Oct. 14. Among those attending were (left to right) James Riley, one of three newly named IU Distinguished Professors who received honorary title at IU’s Founders Day in the spring;.Gerald L. Bepko, chancellor of the IUPUI campus, who was awarded both the Alliance Award for the Promotion of Excellence and honorary membership; Jim Sherman, Chancellor’s Professor of psychology at IUB and a recipient of the Alliance Award for the Promotion of Excellence; Dr. George Stookey, Distinguished Professor emeritus of dentistry; Henry Besch, Showalter Professor of pharmacology at IUPUI and current director of the alliance; Paul Newman, a new Distinguished Professor of linguistics at IUB; and Richard Shiffrin, a new Distinguished Professor of psychology at IUB.

Sister Helen Prejean (left, above and below), author of Dead
Man Walking and an advocate for the abolishment of capital
punishment, appeared at the IU Auditorium Oct. 15 for a public discussion
of the death penalty. Tom Perkins of the Indiana Office of the Attorney
General presented the state side of the issue and the meeting was
moderated by IU Bloomington Chancellor Sharon Brehm. Prejean spoke
with two members of the coalition, Abolish the Death Penalty, as
she made her way into the auditorium. Pictured with her are Pat
