| Voices From The War Zone, a 28-page magazine published and distributed by the School of Journalism at IUPUI, was nominated as one of four finalists in the nat
ional Society of Professional Journalists’ annual Mark of Excellence competition in the student magazine category. The award went to the University of Oregon.
The publication, put together by student editors of IUPUI Sagamore, featured interviews with Balkan journalists who covered the deadly conflicts in Bosnia and Croatia in the early 1990s. The magazine captured what students learned during a foreign
studies course designed and directed by Sherry Ricchiardi in the summer of 2001. Ricchiardi, a professor in the School of Journalism at IUPUI and a senior writer for the American Journalism Review was assisted by Deb Perkins, assistant to the dean
at the IUPUI journalism school.
James W. Brown, professor of journalism, served as publisher of the magazine and Patrick J. McKeand, publisher of IUPUI Sagamoreand adjunct professor, served as the magazine’s adviser.
