Indiana Gov. Frank O'Bannon recently honored the Division of Labor Studies at IUPUI by proclaiming September as "Labor Education Month." A plaque commemorating the governor's action was presented to division director Chuck Davis (holding the plaque) during the city of Indianapolis's Labor Day parade and celebration. More than 500 people gathered in the Student Activities Center on Sept. 27 to watch as Una Mae Reck became the fourth chancellor of IU South Bend. The installation occurred shortly before noon as the mantle of office was placed on her shoulders by Alfred Guillaume, university grand marshal, and Fredrick Eichhorn and Cora Smith Breckenridge, IU trustees. IU President Myles Brand said her education, energy, humanity and experience have more than prepared her for the leadership of the campus.

Standing before the crowd of faculty, staff, community leaders and students, Reck spoke about the need to be involved, not to sit on the sidelines but to dance. “As any dancer will tell you, the hardest part is taking the first steps. But at IU South Bend we did that long ago.”

She spoke of the challenges of a student-focused university. She outlined the needs to develop meaning undergraduate and graduate programs and to increase enrollment, diversity and retention.

She said there is a continued need to strengthen relationships with other area universities and colleges to ensure program articulation.

Reck also said the campus will improve communication, and strengthen its business structure and community ties. “I pledge to bring cohesive, meaningful leadership to the campus through team and community building, direct communications, integrity, civility and trust—guided always by a commitment to IU South Bend and to Indiana University.”
