Indiana University received the state’s 2002 Lambda Legal Leadership Award for its adoption last year of domestic partner benefits for employees at the annual benefit for the Lambda Legal Defense Fund Sept. 19 in Indianapolis. Lambda is a national gay/les bian legal rights organization.

Accepting the award on behalf of the university was John Walda, former president of the IU Board of Trustees (far left) who currently serves as IU’s executive director of federal relations. Receiving the individual award for his efforts to promote a domes tic partner policy at the university was Steve Sanders (right), a former assistant dean at the IU College of Arts and Sciences who is now attending law school at the University of Michigan. Kevin Cathcart (center), executive director of Lambda, gave the k eynote address. IU’s institutional colleague, Purdue University, followed suit with a domestic partner benefit package earlier this year.
