Violette et Mister B. was filmed at the Paris Opera Ballet in 1999 by famed ballet documentarian Dominique Delouche and made its Boston premiere, along with 25 other French films, at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts French Film Festival in July.
The 85-minute biographical documentary centers on IU School of Music ballet professor Violette Verdy, who, according to Boston Globe arts columnist Christine Temin, was the greatest dancer among the five directors in Boston Ballet history as well a
s “one of the most encouraging and appreciative of coaches.”
Mr. B is famed choreographer George Ballanchine, with whom Verdy worked at the New York City Ballet. The documentary mixes biographical material and archival extracts to create a portrait of the famed ballerina and her work with both Balanchine and Jerome
Robbins who created many works for her between 1958 and 1976.
“The magic still comes through in the film,” wrote Anna Kisselgoff in the New York Times.
