| In July, Indiana Gov. Joe Kernan named a retired Gary physician and a financial services executive from Carmel as the newest members of the IU Board of Trustees. Dr. Clarence Boone of Gary, and Jeffrey Cohen of Carmel were appointed to three-year terms. Later in the month, the governor announced that Bloomington resident and board vice president Stephen Ferguson, who has served as a trustee since 1998, was reappointed to another three-year term. Sue Talbot of Bloomington was re-elected to a second three-year term by a vote among IU alumni.
Boone, a retired obstetrician and gynecologist, has long been active in civic,
medical and IU circles through his involvement in and leadership
of various organizations and committees, such as the Gary Citywide
Development Corp., Lake County Medical Society, IU Foundation,
IU Alumni Association, Chancellor’s Advisory Council and Vision
Task Force for IU Northwest and the Advisory Council to the Dean
of the IU School of Medicine. He is the co-founder of the Neal/Marshall
Alumni Club of the IUAA. Boone earned two degrees from IU, a bachelor’s
of science degree in anatomy and physiology in 1953 and a medical
degree in 1956.
Cohen is the managing director of McDonald Financial Group in
Indianapolis. He also earned two degrees from IU, a bachelor’s
of science degree in business in 1986 and a law degree in 1989.
He practiced law for several years before moving into the investments
field. His civic and IU-related activities include service on
the boards of directors for the Jewish Federation of Greater Indianapolis,
VEI (a subsidiary of Community Hospital) and the Indianapolis/Marion
County Library Foundation. He is a member of the IU Varsity Club,
Hoosier Hundred Scholars, IU Alumni Association, I-Men’s Association
and Sigmi Phi Epsilon fraternity.
