David Maloney, physics, has been selected to receive a Distinguished Service Citation from the American Association of Physics Teachers. A letter from AAPT cites Maloney’s contributions to the organization, including his leadership in workshops and his work to activate the pre-high school committee. For the past three years, microbiologist Deborah Ross and the St. Joseph River Watershed Initiative have partnered in a research study of the quality of water in the St. Joseph River. The Bacteria Source Tracking Project, which was funded in part through grants from the Fort Wayne Community Foundation and the Indiana Department of Environmental Management, has helped determine sources of fecal contamination in the water. The research is helping to identify sources of contamination, determine priority areas that require attention and develop measures to mitigate the problem. Ross and colleague George Mourad are also working on a joint research project concerning contaminated soil, through a grant from the Indiana Academy of Sciences.

Bruce Kingsbury, biology, has received several grants totaling nearly $100,000 for several research projects. The largest single grant, $40,000 from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, will be used for the study of northern populations of the copperbelly water snake. Two other grants are also for projects in Michigan. A grant of $18,400 from the Edward Lowe Foundation will help fund a Kirtland’s snake research project and $10,000 from the U.S. Department of Agriculture will supplement an ongoing survey project on the Hoosier National Frank Paladino, biology, is the new associate editor of the Journal Chelonian Conservation and Biology, an international peer review publication.
