Teleconference Oct. 9 to examine sustainability and higher education’s role

Are the IU campuses green? And what does it mean to be "green"? What are the meaning and value of "sustainability" for higher education?

Issues regarding environmental responsibility and American campuses’ role in nourishing that responsibility will be the subject of a telecast Oct. 9 on the IU Bloomington campus.

Several hundred campuses will be tuning in to the two-hour national telecast, sponsored by the Society for College and University Planners (SCUP), the national professional group for operations and facilities administrators. The IU Bloomington Council for Environmental Stewardship is a local sponsor of the event, which is scheduled at the Frangipani Room of the Indiana Memorial Union, beginning at 10:45 a.m. Bloomington time Thursday (Oct. 9).

Sustainability is a rapidly evolving international concept which looks at strategic ways to plan for current and future generations to be healthy; meet their individual needs, and live in safe, culturally diverse and economically secure communities. SCUP is sponsoring the telecast to emphasize the responsibility of higher education in accelerating a shift in thinking, values and actions toward sustainability and a secure and civil society.

Other local sponsors include the IU Office of the University Architect, the IU Physical Plant and the IU School of Public and Environmental Affairs.
