The Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS) turned to the creative talents of the IU Herron School of Art to design its official logo for the 2004 Indianapolis 500.
”We felt like our logos were starting to look the same from year to year, and we were looking for a fresh approach. I thought art students would be a great, new resource from which to tap new ideas,” said Dawn Dyer, manager of creative services for the IMS. With the help of Herron students enrolled in a professional practice course led by Paula Differding, associate professor of visual communication, IMS had an assortment of new logo ideas.
”We initially received six completely different concepts,” explained Dyer. “What stood out about the winning logo by Greg Beall was the amount of research he had put into his artwork. He really dug into the history of the Indianapolis 500, and worked to understand what the Speedway, as a client, needed in the logo. The result was a great mark. It is fresh, yet retains the traditional feel of the Indy 500.”
The new logo was unveiled trackside May 15 and will appear on 2004 Indy 500 race merchandise, print materials, television, Web sites, banners and billboards.
Herron recently received a $2 million gift from the Allen Whitehill Clowes Charitable Foundation for the Sidney and Lois Eskenazi Hall, Herron’s future home on the IUPUI campus. Read more at this Web site:
