| The eyes are on the gold this year as the IU School of Optometry celebrates its 50th anniversary. The school began celebrating by hosting the Indiana Optometric Association’s fall educational seminar earlier this week at the Indiana Memorial Union in Bloomington. The photo at left was taken in 1953, the year the first professional courses in optometry were offered at the university; the first master’s degrees in optometry were conferred in 1956. Optometry operated as a division of the university, with its degrees granted by the College of Arts and Sciences and the University Graduate School, until 1975, at which time the school became a degree-granting entity in its own right.
