IU South Bend biotech partnership produces
student mentoring bonus
What started as a business arrangement quickly became an academic
advantage for IU South Bends departments of Chemistry and Biology. The
creators of Plateletworks, a new high-speed blood test with capabilities
to reduce surgical complications, originally
contracted to use the South Bend campus laboratories and equipment for
their research. But now theyve also become irreplaceable campus mentors
for students interested in the fast-growing and highly competitive world
of biotechnical research.

An ANGEL in the classroom
A new type of E-learning software is available for the first time for
free to educational institutions in the United States, thanks to an
ANGEL. In this case, the ANGEL is A New Global Environment for Learning,
a software program developed by IUPUI facult
y members Ali Jafari and David Mills that allows teachers to finally
break down the walls of time and space that have often separated them
from the community they serve, according to one teacher whose tried it
out.

A day in the life
Was the world of women two millennia ago all that different from the
world of 21st-century women? Perhaps, but the smaller details of
domesticity and personal adornment may not be all that far afield,
according to an IUB curator and an archeologist who
have combined their expertise to create the upcoming exhibit, The
Spindle and the Shrine: Daily Life of Women in Classical Times, opening
Saturday , Oct. 7, at the IU Art Museum in Bloomington. Ancient women
socialized outside the home, served as pries
ts, organized festivals and even performed as mimes, musicians, jugglers
and acrobats in broad forms of street entertainment. And yet, even with
six of the 12 Olympic deities being women, Greece and Rome were
exceedingly patriarchal cultures that believed
the home was the center of a womans universe.
