Virtual archaeology

Want to have a look at ancient archaeological sites in the world without the expense of travel?

Thanks to researchers in Indianapolis and Bloomington and IBM High Performance Storage System (HPSS) technology, that is possible now.

Data collected and archived by using state-of-the-art digital techniques will make it possible to develop virtual reality replicas of ancient ruins as they look today. That will include scalable, multimedia applications that re-create the history, sights and sounds of the locations as they were in ancient times.

IU’s Cultural Digital Library Indexing Our Heritage (CLOH) is using IBM HPSS technology to organize, access and send vast amounts of data among researchers at speeds that are hundreds of times faster than in the past.

CLOH, a project of the School of Informatics, will draw upon resources of the IUPUI New Media Program and extensive faculty expertise in interactive media.
