IU East CEE receives state Peter V. Harrington Award

The IU East Center for Economic Education has received the prestigious 2002 Peter V. Harrington University Center Award for Excellence. The award was given last night at the Indiana Council for Economic Education’s (ICEE) annual awards program in Indianapolis. The award includes a $5,000 check to be used for the advancement of economic education in the Richmond area.

Harrington was the director of ICEE from 1971-1997. His leadership built the ICEE into one of the strongest economic councils in the country. Indiana’s 13 Centers for Economic Education are central to ICEE organizational strength. Each center makes teacher training in economics and its pedagogy available within a 50-mile radius of any K-12 teacher in Indiana.

Ashton Veramallay directs the IU East Center for Economic Education, and the program is assisted by secretary Ann Judge and teacher advocate Nancy Horst. The award was created in 1998 with a two-fold purpose—to honor Harrington and to recognize the center that most exemplifies the mission for economic education and literacy. Prior award winners include Center for Economic Education at Ball State University, IUPUI and Purdue University.

During the 2001-2002 school year, the IU East center has had a substantial increase in the number of teachers involved in after-school training programs, trained 44 teachers in intensive graduate-credit summer workshops, added Economic America school, supported three Indiana Department of Energy Mini-Grant schools, maintained a viable advisory committee, had two of the 12 statewide student winners in the Economics Calendar Contest and generated program funds from the region through fund-raising activities.
