Execution is justified by some Americans as being an effective deterrent against capital crime, an appropriate punishment, a means for closure to murder victims’ families; some believe the judicial system is badly flawed, so much so, that both Illinois and Maryland have placed moratoriums on further executions. In Indiana, both state and federal executions are proceeding on schedule.
Sister Helen Prejean, author of Dead Man Walking, and Tom Perkins of the Indiana Office of the Attorney General will present opposing views of capital punishment as part of a series of events addressing capital punishment Oct.11-18. Former U.S. Rep. Lee Hamilton will moderate the evening event. Free tickets will be available to the general public Monday (Sept. 30) at the IU Auditorium box office and the IMU Activities Desk. Call the Union Board at 812-855-4682 for more information.
