Wired washers, online laundry room latest fold in dorm living

E-Suds, a computer system that will allow students to check a Web site for available washers and dryers in their particular residence hall, pay for services through a coded cell phone system and receive an E-mail when the wash load is ready to be collected, is being installed in at colleges in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan and Ohio.

Developers believe that “wired” washers and dryers can help eliminate the hassle of the dormitory laundry system by implementing a Web-based reservation system, provide for the payment of small sums electronically and allow dormitory personnel to better monitor the ebb and flow of students and sudsy basement machinery. USA Technologies and IBM developed the system.
