Wylie House gets a spruce up

Photos by Chris Meyer

Volunteer Lee Ridge works at the Wylie House Museum two days a week for exercise. "I tend to be lazy. That motivates me a little," Ridge said about his work.

Mark Sawyer, a labor foreman with Advanced Restoration of Indianapolis, paints shutters at the Wylie House Museum.

In partnership with the Elizabeth Sage Historic Costume Collection, Wylie House hosted an exhibit of 19th-century children's clothing this summer. This little black velvet suit with braided trim was worn by Joseph Irwin Sweeney, who was born in Columbus in 1880. The ensemble, from the Sage collection, was purchased in London when the child’s family was en route to Constantinople for diplomatic service. In October, Wylie House is planning an exhibit of 19th- and 20th-century American zithers.

The Sage Collection contains more than 20,000 items of clothing and is maintained by the IU Department of Apparel Merchandising and Interior Design. Although the Sage Collection has had no public gallery since 1992, it is used for research and for exhibition, and in classroom and design studio settings. Wylie House Museum is owned and maintained by IU and is a part of the IU Libraries.
