Other campuses exploring residency
IU South Bend

As enrollment of traditional-aged students (18-22) continues to increase, IU South Bend is attempting to accommodate demand for housing and planning for the future, according to Ken Baierl, director of marketing and communications at IUSB.

The university currently owns 38 houses adjacent to campus and makes those available to more than 110 full-time students for residential housing. The campus is also forming partnerships with nearby apartment complexes, landlords and real estate agencies to coordinate support for students looking for residential housing. A Web site is under development which will answer questions about the availability of housing to students and provide information to make finding housing easy and convenient. This semester, a residential housing adviser is available to help students adjust to campus life and monitor activities and issues of the residential student population.

Next year, plans are in place for a full-time director of student housing. Chancellor Una Mae Reck is also working closely with IU representatives on proposals for additional student housing. A feasibility study was completed in 2003, and this year, a land infrastructure survey of the possible future site for new student housing was conducted. IU South Bend owns 26 acres of land across the St. Joseph River that is being considered for development of residential student housing, recreational activity and athletic fields; a pedestrian bridge would provide access to the main campus.

IU Southeast

Plans to build housing accommodating up to 300 students are currently under review by IU Southeast administrators; a study is expected to be presented to IU trustees later this year. The earliest date for opening: 2009.
