Sept begins tenure as IUB dean of faculties

Sept

U Bloomington anthropologist Jeanne Sept has become the 13th dean of the faculties at IU Bloomington. Her appointment began Aug. 1, and she replaces Moya Andrews, who has retired.

Sept was an associate dean of the faculties from 2000-2003 and has served as chairperson of the Department of Anthropology.

"It is a privilege to join the 12 previous deans of the faculties who have served our academic community so wisely and well," she said. "Our office will continue to promote core academic values and provide fundamental support for our faculty throughout their careers. I see exciting opportunities to bring together faculty of diverse experience and imagination to develop the rich academic traditions of our campus. Our intellectual community has grown strong from shared commitments to both research and education excellence. It will endure through the myriad achievement of individual faculty as we each engage students to push the boundaries of knowledge into the future."

A paleoanthropologist, Sept came to IU from Harvard University in 1987 as an assistant professor. At Harvard, she had been a research associate, a teaching assistant, an instructor and a visiting lecturer. Her research interests focus on the archaeology of human origins in Africa, including the behavioral ecology and ancient diets of our ancestors.

Sept has won two Teaching Excellence Recognition Awards at IU and has been an innovator and federal grant recipient in educational technology. Her Web site has been recognized as one of the best instructional sites by Archaeology magazine.
