The latest research on black philanthropy and how it can inform the daily work of non-profit professionals, fund-raisers and scholars will highlight the IU Center on Philanthropy’s 17th annual symposium, titled "Black Philanthropy: Strategies for Building on the Heritage," which is being co-hosted by the National Center for Black Philanthropy, Inc.
The symposium is Aug. 26-27 at the University Place Conference Center and Hotel on the campus of IUPUI, where the center is headquartered.
Attendees will hear various perspectives from a wide range of experts with backgrounds in fundraising, philanthropy, and management of nonprofits as they relate to the black community. This year’s speakers include:
• Emmett Carson, president and CEO of the Minneapolis Foundation
and chair of the Council on Foundations’ Board of Directors
• Charles R. Stephens, managing consultant (Atlanta office) of Skystone Ryan, Inc.
• Alice Green Burnette, principal, Advancement Solutions
• Jean Fairfax, philanthropist and consultant on black philanthropy
Topics to be addressed will include the historical patterns of black philanthropy, research on giving to and from the black community, faith-based community initiatives, stories of personal philanthropy, and grantmaker and fund-raiser perspectives on black philanthropy.
