• A Ph.D. program in philanthropic studies has been approved by the Indiana Commission for Higher Education. The first doctoral candidates will begin their studies in the fall of 2004 at the IU Center on Philanthropy, headquartered in Indianapolis.

• IU South Bend has become one of 90 sites nationwide to offer an accelerated bachelor’s degree program for nursing. Geared for students with an undergraduate degree who would like to make a career change, the program’s first group of 10 students was admitted this spring.

• IU has honored 268 alumni with the Distinguished Alumni Service Award since the award’s inception 50 years ago. The newest recipients, recognized June 15 at IU’s Cream and Crimson Weekend in Bloomington, are: Clarence W. Boone Sr. of Gary; Gayle Karch Cook of Bloomington; Alecia A. DeCoudreaux of Indianapolis; Patricia R. Miller of Fort Wayne; and Gen. Larry R. Ellis of Atlanta, Ga.

• The Kokomo campus’ first-of-its-kind IU baccalaureate program in professional communication will enroll its first students this fall. The new major brings together course work in writing, communication arts and information technologies. Graduates are expected to seek employment in business and manufacturing, publishing, non-profit organizations, the computer industry, science fields and advertising.
