‘Art is what you paint’

Children’s art benefit will provide doorbell system

By Cynthia Vaughn

Gage Vanscyoc, age 4, is one of the IU East artists whose work will be displayed in the lobby of Springwood Hall through July 21.

IU East’s annual Child Development Center (CDC) art show opens July 7. The show, entitled Fun in the Sun, will feature works by children who attend the center, which is located in Springwood Hall on the Richmond campus.

Although the young artists range in age from two to 12 years of age, they have strong ideas of what art means to them. When posed with the question: "What is art?" Sawyer Miller, age 4, from Richmond, confidently stated: "Art is what you paint."

The youthful talent also has strong opinions on how proceeds from the sale of their pieces should be spent. Braxtyn Hurley, age 3, from Lynn, declared, "I want to buy hamburgers with the money that we raise."

The proceeds will be used to improve the center’s doorbell system. "Parents get really frustrated when the doorbell is not working, so the CDC decided to make this year's funds benefit the parents that support us," said Karla Davis, director of the IU East CDC.

Paintings, drawings and sculptures will be auctioned off to the public on July 21, beginning at 6 p.m.

The show may be viewed Monday-Thursday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday in Springwood Hall Lobby.
