Wise assumes vice presidency of world’s largest computing society

Wise

The Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) has elected David Wise, a professor of computer science on the IU Bloomington campus, vice president for 2002-04.

ACM is the world's oldest and largest educational and scientific computing society. Since 1947, ACM has provided a vital forum for the exchange of information, ideas and discoveries. It serves a membership of more than 80,000 computing professionals in more than 100 countries in all areas of industry, academia and government.

Wise, who currently serves as secretary-treasurer of ACM, will join new president Maria Klawe on July 1 in leading the organization for the next two years.

"This is a clear acknowledgment of his leadership in the field," said Dennis Gannon, chair of the IU department. "Professor Wise has been an important contributor to many ACM activities for a very long time."

Wise is a leading expert on parallel programming, in which algorithms are performed simultaneously -- instead of successively -- to create faster, more efficient computer programs. He is currently working on bringing fields as diverse as programming languages and styles, algorithms, architecture and multi-processing under a new unifying paradigm.
