Arthur Vivian

IU East in Richmond is mourning the death of Arthur "Art" M. Vivian earlier this month. Vivian celebrated his 95 th birthday last September in a 20th century history class on the campus and often referred to himself as “the world’s oldest college student.” He had taken classes on the campus for 16 years and had earlier been instrumental to brining IU East to the Richmond community.

Vivian, who received a bachelor's degree from DePauw University in 1927 and a master's degree from the University of Michigan in 1929, was awarded an honorary doctor of laws degree in 1983 from IU for his work in founding the Richmond campus and for his contributions to the economic well-being of east central Indiana.

"We consider Arthur to be a founding father of this campus and his involvement and commitment to the university have been invaluable," IU East Chancellor David Fulton said. "The strongest institutions in Richmond owe a great deal to Arthur."
