New Indiana State Museum features IUPUI student work

Pieces of African-American history reclaimed by IUPUI students during archaeological digs on and near campus are on display throughout the summer at the new Indiana State Museum in Indianapolis’ White River State Park.

The items were chosen for exhibit because of the strong “stories” they tell about the life among African Americans who lived in the Ransom Place neighborhood, according to Elizabeth Kryder Reid, assistant professor and director of museum studies at IUPUI. The neighborhood—a six block area bordered by 10th Street to the north, Martin Luther King Drive to the east, West St. Clair to the south, and Paca to the west—originally populated by white residents, became predominantly African American during the first decade of the 20th century.
