‘We all flow together through the river of time.’
| Advanced drawing students from the IUPUI’s Herron School of Art have designed a public mural at one of the university’s most heavily traveled corridors. The mural, which spans 147 feet, celebrates community partnerships with five neighboring institutions: the Eiteljorg Museum, the Indiana State Museum, the Indianapolis Urban League, the Hispanic Center and the Madame Walker Theatre.
The mural features an abstract representation of a flowing white river with colorful sparkles, with the saying, "We all flow together through the river of time." The phrase is a variation of poetic words created by the ancient Greek philosopher Heraclitus. The depiction will also represent the campus’s proximity to the White River.
"The mural’s design celebrates the connection of the entire IUPUI campus with the surrounding community," said Craig McDaniel, chair of the fine arts program at Herron and one of the professors who led the project. "The two Herron classes that worked on this project gained a valuable opportunity to experience the challenges and rewards of working together on a public art project."
The mural is installed in the IUPUI University Library corridor, between the library and the Business/SPEA and Education/Social Work Building. It will include two display cases promoting activities and opportunities from the five partnering institutions.
Nicole Oglesby, coordinator of Campus Community Programs, said the mural represents ore than just a picture. These partnerships offer increased civic engagement, service learning opportunities and student leadership development," Oglesby said.
