IU Kokomo chancellor receives accolades from alma mater

Person

Ruth Person, chancellor of the IU Kokomo campus, received the Gettysburg College Distinguished Alumnus Award during Honors Day festivities at the Pennsylvania school May 18.

The college recognized Person for her distinguished career in education. A 1967 graduate of Gettysburg College, she worked at the Detroit Public Library and Thomas Nelson Community College before receiving her doctorate in library and information services at University of Michigan. She also studied higher education administration at the Harvard Institute for Educational Management.

Before IU Kokomo selected Person as its chancellor in 1999, she held teaching and academic administration posts at the Catholic University of America, Clarion (Pa.) University, University of Missouri at St. Louis, Ashland University in Ohio, and Angelo State University in Texas.

The chancellor was one of four Gettysburg College alumni to receive the Distinguished Alumnus Award.

In addition to the honor, Person had a reunion with her college roommate and sorority sister, Carole Johnson Phillips, whom she has not seen for more than a decade.

“Gettysburg College believes it is important that this award be presented during the same ceremony as its student awards, thus enabling distinguished alumni to serve as role models for our outstanding students,” said Gordon Haaland, president of Gettysburg College.
