Edward Cobb of IU Bloomington’s Campus Division was on a geranium mission the Friday before IUB’s commencement May 10, joining colleagues in a spring rite of planting 53,000 annuals in flower beds throughout the 2,000-acre campus.

Last week, Bloomington civic leader Eleanor Long celebrated her 98th birthday with friends from the university and the community. She was joined, too, by her son, Ed Long, an educator and composer from Dallas, Texas, at the University Club of the Indiana Memorial Union for the festivities. Long was instrumental in starting a Girls Club in Monroe County and triumphed many philanthropic causes through the years. She is also known for collaborating with her husband, the late Newell Long, a musician and professor at the IU School of Music, on original musical productions, including a 1962 revue, All’s Wells That Ends Well, honoring the retirement of IU President Herman B Wells.
