| A computer simulation tool that predicts growth patterns in central Indiana is now available for public use. The Land Use in Central Indiana (LUCI) Model, developed by John Ottensmann, professor at the IU School of Public and Environmental Affairs on the Indianapolis campus, may be viewed at various demonstration sites around the state this month (see schedule).
The LUCI model is a computer simulation tool that allows users to plug in hypothetical scenarios to test the effect of growth on the central Indiana region. The model creates maps, tables and graphs to predict how changes such as new employers, transportation services and development restrictions would affect future urbanization patterns such as development, population density and traffic congestion in the region. The information generated by LUCI includes an extensive range of summary statistics, from land consumption to an estimate of average journey to work for commuters.
To attend a demonstration, contact the Center for Urban Policy and the Environment at 317-261-3000 or E-mail luci@iupui.edu. There is no cost and attendees will receive a CD that includes the LUCI program, a help file, tutorial and center publications related to LUCI.
