IU president receives honor from USC’s Black Alumni Association

Herbert

IU President Adam Herbert has received the Outstanding Alumnus Award from the University of Southern California’s Black Alumni Association.

The award was presented during the organization’s 27th annual Scholarship Benefit Gala on the USC campus April 23. More than 600 guests were present for the event with the theme, “Making the difference through leadership and distinguished service.”

Herbert earned a bachelor of arts degree in 1966 and a master of public administration degree in 1968 from USC. He went on to earn a doctorate in urban affairs at the University of Pittsburgh.

The award is in recognition of Herbert’s long career of public service and leadership in higher education. Before he became president of IU in August 2003, he was at the University of North Florida, where he was Regents Professor and founding executive director of the Florida Center for Public Policy and Leadership.

Herbert also served as president of the University of North Florida from 1989-1998, and he then served three years as chancellor of the State University System of Florida, the second largest university system in America.

Herbert has held a number of national leadership positions. He served as president of the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration. He is a member of the Knight Foundation Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics and previously served as chair of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division II Presidents Council.
