Take a hike (cyberly) along China’s Great Wall. A contingent of students, faculty, staff and friends of IU’s School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation left earlier this week for Beijing and will be meeting their counterparts from the Beijing University of Physical Education for five days of hiking along sections of the wall closed to the public. IU’s Office of Communications and Marketing has created this Web site so that everyone can join in the progress of the goodwill hike from their computer monitors. Also included will be “letters from the wall,” photographs taken along the way and audio messages from the participants.
The daily reports, letters from the wall, photo and audio sections are expected to be of particular interest to K-12 students. The group is the first to receive permission for such a trip from the China Great Wall Commission. In addition to the hiking, usually from three to six hours each day, there will be welcome and farewell banquets, cultural events and daily activities focusing on health, fitness, sport, recreation and leisure. Five American playground stations are being donated to Chinese communities along the Great Wall to help celebrate the 10th anniversary of an international exchange agreement between the two universities.
