• The IU mace, carried by the university’s grand marshal on ceremonial occasions such as commencement, was presented by the IUB chapter of Phi Delta Theta fraternity in celebration of Alpha chapter’s centennial in 1949. A globe of gold-plated glass sits upon a base of ebony. And the twelve large jewels of blue sapphire, ruby, garnet and topaz embedded in the globe are synthetic.

• When Kristen Babb-Sprague performed the aquatic performance that would win her an Olympian gold medal at the 1992 Barcelona, Spain, games, she was wearing a nearly in-visible nose plug to replace the unsightly and painful nose clips that had traditionally been used by synchronized swimmers. The device was designed by faculty at the IU School of Dentistry.
