| University Information Technology Services at IU has announced that the Research and Academic Computing division formerly known as the Unix Workstation Support Group (UWSG) is now the Unix Systems Support Group (USSG).
As the needs of Unix users change, support mechanisms must change to fulfill those needs. "Looking toward the future of Unix deployment on campus, I can foresee us needing to support an ever-increasing variety of tasks," said Stephen Simms, USSG manager. "Even now, we provide more than just workstation support. Remember that UITS evolved from University Computing Services in order to meet the changing needs of technology users at IU. We at the USSG are looking at a similar progression. I feel that this name change accurately reflects changes that have taken place in our services as well as our desire to support a wider range of technology."
The USSG has and will continue to assist with much more than desktop Unix applications. The group's focus will continue expanding to include departmental Unix servers, cluster computing, distributed computing and Web portal development.
"As IU begins to focus more on such areas as cluster and grid computing, it is vital that UITS does its part to support those who use these technologies," said Craig Stewart, director of research and academic computing. "Changing the group's name reflects the ongoing evolution of its services to respond to the needs of our customers."
