Yarber receives mentor award

William Yarber, professor of applied health sciences at the School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation in Bloomington, has received the Graduate and Professional Student Organization’s Faculty Mentor Award. The award is being given to recognize outstanding faculty mentorship to graduate and professional students. Yarber received the award on April 13.

“He clearly does not see his work with students as above and beyond his personal research program. Instead, we are integrated from day one,” wrote one nominator of Yarber. “He has redefined what it means to be a ‘role-model’ in every sense of the term. I would not be the person I am today without the time I have spent with him” wrote another student.

Yarber is senior director of the Rural Center for Prevention of AIDS/ STD Prevention, a joint project of IU, Purdue and Texas A& M universities. He has authored four school AIDS/STD curricula, including the nation's first school AIDS curriculum. His research has focused on examining HIV/STD risk behavior, particularly among youth and rural populations.
