Lugar to speak at IUB commencement
May 10

By Susan Williams

Lugar

(Editor’s note: See below for commencement times and locations.)

U.S. Sen. Richard Lugar (R-Ind.), one of Indiana’s most distinguished statesmen, will deliver the commencement address at Indiana University Bloomington’s 2003 commencement exercises. As was last year’s commencement, the 2003 ceremony will be conducted in Assembly Hall in two sessions, Saturday, May 10, at 10 a.m. and at 3 p.m.

Lugar is an unwavering advocate of U.S. leadership in the world, strong national security, free trade and economic growth. First elected to the U.S. Senate in 1976, after two terms as mayor of Indianapolis, he is a fifth-generation Hoosier and the longest serving senator in Indiana history. He won a fifth term in 2000, his third consecutive victory by a two-thirds majority.

Lugar, who is a Navy veteran with experience as an intelligence briefer, serves as the chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee and has been involved with nearly all aspects of U.S. national security. He also is a member and former chairman of the Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry Committee.

A former Rhodes Scholar, Lugar has gained an international reputation for dedication and vision. Together with former Democratic Sen. Sam Nunn, he spearheaded bipartisan legislation that rid the former Soviet republics of Ukraine, Belarus and Kazakhastan of all nuclear weapons. The legislation deactivated thousands of warheads once aimed at the United States and resulted in Lugar being nominated for the Nobel Peace.

On commencement morning, the doors of Assembly Hall will open at 8 a.m. A processional lineup for graduates of six IU schools is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. in the fieldhouse, and the procession begins at 9:15 a.m. Schools participating in the 10 a.m. ceremony are: Kelley School of Business; School of Education, School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation; School of Law; School of Music and the School of Public and Environmental Affairs. Doctoral candidates from these schools also will participate in the morning session.

At 1:30 p.m., the processional lineup for the second commencement session starts in the fieldhouse, with the processional set to begin at 2:15 p.m. The afternoon session includes students from the College of Arts and Sciences, School of Continuing Studies; School of Informatics; School of Journalism; Division of Labor Studies; School of Library and Information Science and School of Optometry. Doctoral candidates from these schools also will participate.

In addition, several schools traditionally hold individual recognition ceremonies. For more information on school activities and recognition ceremonies during commencement weekend, go to:
