COS: Research connections across the globe

By Jan R. Holloway, UITS; Lauren J. Bryant, RUGS; and Shannon F. Walden, R&SP

Access to the global research community is easy for IU faculty and researchers through the Community of Science (COS) Web site, an Internet resource that supports the advancement of individual scholarship and collaboration in the arts, humanities, and sciences. Comprising the broad COS Internet community are more than 460,000 members at 700 universities in more than 120 countries. Scholars can publicize their work, join forces with peers, find funding, and conduct research. Features include:

• The largest Internet repository of funding opportunities with access to more than 22,000 grants in all academic and professional disciplines.

• Weekly updates of funding opportunities.

• Database of research activities and projects sponsored by National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Science Foundation (NSF), United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR), and Medical Research Council, U.K. (MRC).

• Access to U.S. patents and current work in the biomedical, geological, agricultural and engineering fields through COS bibliographic databases and interconnected data resources.

• Searchable information on hundreds of professional societies and meeting and conference schedules.

• Portfolio of Web tools for creating an online customized working environment, including a tool for constructing a customizable CV or NIH 398 Biosketch.

• COS Workbench, a customized Web-based "work space" for professional development and for accessing the array of COS products and services.
