IUSB student activities center

The $15.7 million Student Activities Center on the IU South Bend campus is taking shape for a late September opening, according to Randy Landsburg, director of facilities management. “It will be substantially complete in the fall.”

The first non-academic building on campus will bring people to the site and keep students there, Landsburg said. “When I first started this job 25 years ago, my first duty was to start planning for a student center. It is an exciting phase for the campus.”

In addition to areas dedicated to physical fitness, the building will have office space for student activities and the student newspaper, a food and vending area, an outdoor eating terrace and a VIP area for special receptions.

There will be two entrances, Landsburg said, one off the pedestrian mall on the west side and the east side main entrance. “The east side is the event entrance for major events like basketball games,” he said.

Landsburg said the multi-leveled area is very open and visitors will be able to see across basketball courts and from the running track. “The one criticism we heard about other facilities that they were too chopped up, too many small areas.” This one will be different.

• The 103,000 square foot center will include three full-size basketball courts with bleacher seating on the main court for 1,600, multiple handball courts and exercise areas. One set of locker rooms will be dedicated to the basketball players while fitness fans will use another set.

• Glass on three sides of the suspended running track will give runners the opportunity to see something “outdoorsy” while running. “At night, it is going to be lit up like a jewel. I’ve said it before, ‘If you build it, they will come.’ I think that it has been something lacking on campus, and everyone is excited about the opening,” Landsberg said.
