He knew from the beginning that IU was 'something special' Members of the IU Bloomington Class of 2001 will get to hear one of the campus’ most eloquent scholars deliver the commencement address May 5. Kenneth Gros Louis, who will retire as vice president for academic affairs and chancellor of the Bloomington campus at the end of June, also will receive an honorary degree at commencement. What many students, faculty, alumni and colleagues from other institutions don't know is that his nearly four decades of memories include a tap dance and flaming baton gig in 1982 to benefit the Briscoe Fellows.  Photo by Paul Martens Ken Gros Louis, seated beside the sculpture of one of his mentors, the late Herman B Wells, will retire at the end of June. In addition to his titles as vice president for academic affairs and Bloomington chancellor, Gros Louis serves as a professor of English and of comparative literature, is a former dean of the IU College of Arts and Sciences and former chair of the IUB Department of English. In wider educational circles, he has been a force as well, serving as chair of the Committee on Institutional Cooperation, the consortium of academic interests of Big Ten universities plus the University of Chicago, and as a trustee of the North Central Association, the accrediting body for universities.
