He knew from the beginning that IU was
'something special'
Members of the IU Bloomington Class of 2001
will get to hear one of the campus’ most eloquent scholars deliver
the commencement address May 5. Kenneth Gros Louis, who will retire
as vice president for academic affairs and chancellor of the Bloomington
campus at the end of June, also will receive an honorary degree at
commencement. What many students, faculty, alumni and colleagues from
other institutions don't know is that his nearly four decades of memories
include a tap dance and flaming baton gig in 1982 to benefit the Briscoe
Fellows. Read about his reminiscences, his plans to teach at the Honors
College and plans for a scholarship to be named in his honor.

IU has the 'Best'
Twenty-nine graduate programs are ranked
among the top 25 in the country in the new edition of U.S. News
& World Report's "Best Graduate Schools 2001-2002."
The full rankings were released to the general public last week
in "Best Graduate Schools" and many appear in the magazine’s
current issue. The highest ranked of all of IU's graduate programs
was the 29-year-old School of Public and Environmental Affairs (SPEA)
in Bloomington, which edged Princeton University to capture the
number three spot on the U.S. News & World Report list. Harvard
and Syracuse universities tied for first place.

Alphabet soup
If written language began as a tool of
economic reality, the development of an alphabet catapulted it into
something more concrete—an intellectual and even spiritual necessity.
Human beings, with their restlessness and endless attraction to
new ideas, suddenly had a way to create, communicate and preserve
their journey through time. Read about hieroglyphics, quipus,

Ken Gros Louis, seated beside the sculpture of one of his mentors,
the late Herman B Wells, will retire at the end of June. In addition
to his titles as vice president for academic affairs and Bloomington
chancellor, Gros Louis serves as a professor of English and of comparative
literature, is a former dean of the IU College of Arts and Sciences
and former chair of the IUB Department of English. In wider educational
circles, he has been a force as well, serving as chair of the Committee
on Institutional Cooperation, the consortium of academic interests
of Big Ten universities plus the University of Chicago, and as a trustee
of the North Central Association, the accrediting body for universities.
