| Karen Hanson, chair of the IUB Department of Philosophy, will be the guest speaker at a colloquium and public lecture on Tuesday, (April 16), for Philosophy Day 2002 at IU South Bend.
“How Bad Can Good Art Be?” is the topic for the colloquium at 2:30 p.m. in the third-floor lounge of Wiekamp Hall. A reception will follow at 4 p.m. in Wiekamp Hall. The philosophy lecture, “The Ties That Bind: Philosophical Perspectives on the Family,” will begin at 7 p.m. in Room 1001, Wiekamp Hall.
In the wake of Sept. 11, many people began to reexamine their priorities and renewed their focus on the family. Hanson will examine the philosophically perplexing and generally underanalyzed family. The talk will survey some important philosophers’ views of the family and will invite comments on the joys and burdens of the family ties.
Hanson has won numerous teaching awards and is the author of The Self Imagined: Philosophical Reflections on the Social Character of Psyche. Her teaching and research interests include the aesthetics and philosophy of art, philosophy of language and ethics.
Both the lecture and colloquium are free and open to the public. Philosophy Day is presented by the Department of Philosophy, with support from Women’s Studies and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
