IU Kokomo campus mourns loss of colleague, friend

Hathaway
Lois Hathaway, registrar of IU Kokomo, died Nov. 24, from a brain aneurysm. She had served the campus for more than 23 years and as registrar for 17 years.

Originally from Marion, she received a bachelor of science degree in education from IU Kokomo in 1976. She had been an active volunteer in the IU Alumni Association and was hired as director of alumni relations at the Kokomo campus in 1979. She worked as an admissions counselor beginning in November 1980, then as director of admissions from September 1982 until March 1985, when she was appointed registrar.

Hathaway was known by many as the “voice of commencement” as she read the name of each degree recipient at the annual May ceremony held on Kokomo’s campus. In 2000, her loyalty and commitment to the institution were honored when she received the IU Alumni Association’s Distinguished Alumni Award.

“She will always be remembered for her professionalism, earning the esteem of faculty and staff here, and from colleagues in the university and across the state,” said Jack Tharp, vice chancellor for student services. “As we mourn her loss, we also celebrate her work and contributions, which brought recognition and respect to the Kokomo campus.”

“Lois worked hard, but, even better, she worked smart,” said IU Kokomo Chancellor Ruth Person. “She was respected across the Indiana University system.”

“Lois was the consummate professional and colleague,” said Sarah Hawkins, director of student development. “When I began my career at IU Kokomo, she told me the importance of building relationships with the various departments and individuals on our campus. She would introduce me to members of the faculty and staff, and made me feel comfortable working here.”

“It was her ability to collaborate and her technical competence that made her a demonstrated leader,” according to Stuart Green, vice chancellor for academic affairs. Green also noted her love of celebrating St. Patrick’s Day and her role in starting the annual Spring Break Beach Party for campus staff. “She had a sense of community and fun,” he said.
