| The STudent Academic Recognition, or STAR, scholarship program offers financial aid to students who have strong academic records in high school.
“With increased numbers of high school students going to college, the market place has become more competitive,” said Jack Tharp, IU Kokomo vice chancellor for student services. “Merit scholarships are the norm rather than the exception.”
The STAR program targets students who have good high school records, but are not scholarship eligible at other public colleges and universities. “We have tried to create a market niche, where the scholarship, in effect, states, ‘We value your high school record, and we want you to attend IU Kokomo.’”
STAR will award renewable $1,000 and $500 annual scholarships to 55 new full-time students, starting in fall 2003. Students do not need to apply for the scholarship. IU Kokomo will make an award commitment at the time of a student’s official admission.
To receive the $1,000 scholarship, students must rank in the top 20 percent of their high school class and have a combined SAT score of 1100 (ACT = 24). To receive the $500 scholarship, students must rank in the upper 30 percent of their high school class and have a combined SAT score of 950 (ACT = 20). Recipients can continue to receive the scholarships through four years at IU Kokomo, by maintaining high grade-point averages.
Nancy Dailey, vice chancellor for external relations, said the campus will
seek $2.4 million over the next three years to support scholarships,
including $400,000 for faculty development.
