| Finding a comfortable place to study, visit with friends and just “hang out” has become a lot easier lately at IU Kokomo. More trees and picnic tables have been added to the landscape. Benches purchased for the IU Kokomo Art Gallery give visitors a chance to rest and reflect on exhibits. New and improved student lounges have been established in each of the campus’ four major buildings. The lounges in the campus’ newest structure, Virgil and Elizabeth Hunt Hall, were designed with floor-to-ceiling windows that look out on the wooded banks of Kokomo Creek.
“We are doing everything we can, given the many limitations on our resources at present, to create a student-friendly and visitor-friendly physical environment that is pleasant to work in,” said IU Kokomo Chancellor Ruth Person.
“When I arrived on campus three years ago, one of my first observations was that there were very few places where students could sit and study or visit, either indoors or outdoors. The physical enhancements are definitely a change for the better,” she said.
The IU Kokomo Alumni Association plans to create an “Alumni Park” around the small wood-and-stone structure called the Wellhouse, located on the north side of campus behind the Main Building. The Wellhouse sheltered a water well at IU Kokomo’s original site on Sycamore Street.
“When IU Kokomo moved to its current address in 1965, students and alumni
raised money and community support to have the Wellhouse moved to
the new campus,” said Cathy Hightower, director of alumni relations.
“It is a piece of our past and tradition.” The proposed park would
include picnic tables and a marker that explains the history of
the Wellhouse, she said. “Our wish is for both alumni and students
to use the park and celebrate this piece of IU Kokomo history.”
