Campus innovations address needs of a diverse student body

B.A. in professional communications

A first-of-its-kind baccalaureate program on any IU campus, the new bachelor of arts in professional communications at IU Kokomo brings together course work in writing, communication arts and information technologies. Classes will cover “tools” for technical writing, research design and visual communication, as well as the study of communication theory and professional practices. Approved in November 2001, the program will enroll its first students in fall 2003.

Compared to traditional communications training, the professional communications program places “a heavier emphasis on writing and technology,” said Scott Jones, an assistant professor of English who helped draft the professional communications curriculum. Graduates will enjoy greater “flexibility” in selecting careers, he said. “They can do corporate communications, but they can also go into Web site development or technical writing.”

Jones noted that universities have traditionally separated many of the disciplines that will be studied in the professional communications courses—English, organizational communications, journalism, video production and writing for online audiences. With the new major, students can learn from “a better mixture” of these fields.

Demand for these skills is growing. In 1994, Money magazine predicted a 23 percent employment gain for technical communicators by 2005. In 1998, U.S. News and World Report listed technical writing as one of the 20 “hot job tracks.”
