“So many parents say that they want to be involved in their child’s
selection of a college, but don’t know what kinds of questions to
ask,” said Jack Tharp, vice chancellor for student services at IU
Kokomo.
A new brochure from IU Kokomo, “Selecting the Right College: A Guide for Students and Parents,” suggests questions that can help a student find the school that best fits his or her needs. The publication outlines five major selling points of college and universities: degree programs, size, costs, quality and location. The guide shows how IU Kokomo stacks up in those five areas, and lets readers rate IU Kokomo’s benefits against other school choices.
“Selecting the Right College” was inspired by Tharp’s discussions with higher education colleagues, looking for college literature geared to parents, particularly those who’ve not attended college. “The bottom line is that the number one influence on a teenager for college selection is the parent, so this kind of brochure made sense,” Tharp said. Tharp first authored the brochure in 1995, and then updated it last fall, in response to increased college enrollments by traditional age students. It has been distributed to high school guidance counselors in north central Indiana.
The brochure can also be helpful to adults seeking higher education for career
enhancement and transitions, Tharp noted.
