Campus innovations address needs of a diverse student body

M.A. in liberal studies

The master of arts degree in liberal studies (M.L.S.), approved for IU Kokomo in August 2002, provides students with the opportunity to take an individualized program of graduate courses and interdisciplinary core seminars in the arts and sciences. Sue Sciame-Giesecke, interim dean of the School of Arts and Sciences, believes the program will attract recent college graduates and mid-career adults who are looking to further their education, either for career advancement or personal fulfillment.

“Additionally, this degree will serve as an appropriate credential for area teachers in a K–12 setting, who instruct in the arts and sciences disciplines,” she said.

Students will complete 30 hours of course work, choosing classes from the divisions of Natural, Information and Mathematical Sciences; Social and Behavioral Sciences; and Humanities.

The degree program proposal noted “distinctive resources” located near the Kokomo campus that might inspire and complement liberal studies graduate projects. These include Kokomo Opalescent Glass, Grissom Air Park, Wildcat Creek Reservoir, and the Howard County, Elwood Haynes, and Greentown Glass museums.

The M.L.S. program will admit its first students in the fall 2003 semester; it is the first graduate-level degree program for the School of Arts and Sciences.
