| Jacqueline Guevara, a senior from East Chicago studying nursing at IU Northwest, has attended the U.S. Hispanic Leadership Institute (USHLI) annual leadership conference since middle school and the skills she has taken with her into the community are starting to pay off.
Guevara receives the prestigious Outstanding Youth of America Award during the 23rd annual USHLI leadership conference Friday, March 11, in Chicago. She is being recognized for her years of leadership in organizing Hispanic youth to become more involved in their schools and community. She is a member of the USHLI Conference Planning Committee and has served as a conference moderator several times.
She is a leader on the IU Northwest campus as well, serving as treasurer of the Student Nurses Association and co-chair of ALMA, a Latino student organization. Last year, Guevara helped raise $17,000 toward ALMA’s inaugural endowment scholarship fund-raiser. She is also a member of the campus’ Leadership Development Program at the Institute for Innovative Leadership.
"Jacqui has a real burden for her community and has been a tireless student leader," said Juan Andrade Jr., USHLI president. "It has been my privilege to work with thousands of students and hundreds of student leaders on university campuses throughout the United States. USHLI has helped train more than 20,000 present and future leadersÖand Jacqui is only the fourth in America to be invited to receive our most prestigious youth award."
