Pow wow

Graphic by Jan Sorby/Sorby Design Studio
Mark your calendar: First Nations at IU Bloomington will sponsor a pow wow the weekend of March 28-30 at the IU Fieldhouse in Bloomington. Grand entries are scheduled at 7 p.m. Friday; 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday; and noon Sunday.

Pow wows have been a tradition on college campuses for some years: last November, IUPUI and the Eiteljorg Museum sponsored one as part of Native American Heritage Month, and an elders pow wow is scheduled at IPFW in April.

There are 554 different Native American tribes in the United States, and 40,000 Hoosiers of American Indian descent. Those interested in Native American culture and artistry may wish to see the Dale Chihuly collection of American Indian trade blankets and his Navajo Blanket Cylinders glasswork series, on exhibit at the Eiteljorg in Indianapolis through May 11.

Bloomington pow wow information

Listen to a conversation between Charlie Nelms, IU vice president for student development and diversity, and Wesley Thomas, an IUB anthropologist and organizer of the Bloomington campus’ first pow wow last year, at this HP archival site.
