IU East honors Armstead with Martin Luther King Jr. award

Armstead

Sheila Armstead, clinical assistant professor of social work at IU East, has been awarded the campus’ 2002 Martin Luther King Jr. Multicultural and Diversity Enhancement Award. The award was announced at the MLK birthday celebration last month.

Armstead received a $500 savings bond and a plaque. Her name also will be inscribed on the campus’ MLK plaque in the hall outside the Community Room. The award is given annually to an individual who has enhanced diversity and multiculturalism on the Richmond campus, both outside and inside the classroom.

Armstead has demonstrated her commitment to helping students understand themselves and their personal values in her classroom. She encourages students to look closely at their role in a diverse world as a social work professional. She also was commended by colleagues for being the foundation of events supported by the African American Honors and Scholarship Committee, such as the African American Honors and Scholarship Academic Recognition and the Senior Graduation Recognition. She has also organized the Adopt-a-Class Program with Highland Heights Elementary School. She is a member of the IU East Alumni Association, Community Builders Board and serves on the Richmond Police Advisory Committee.

Also nominated for their contributions to enhancing multiculturalism and diversity on campus were Orlita Kissane, student, for her work on campus and in the community for the Community Builders Study Circles on Race; Kathleen Kreamelmeyer, clinical assistant professor of education, for her emphasis on diversity in the classroom, including service learning; and Lisa Marling, visiting lecturer, for making diversity and multiculturalism central to her classes.
