‘New beginnings’ build on historic roots

By Sandra Patterson-Randles, Chancellor of IU Southeast

Patterson-Randles

As Indiana University Southeast embarks on an era of “new beginnings,” we celebrate our past accomplishments and service to the residents of southern Indiana and the Greater Louisville area. Throughout IU Southeast’s 61 years, our campus community has worked hard to actualize the original vision of Herman B Wells, who sought to make higher education accessible to all Indiana residents. Our achievements in providing a quality IU education have been realized because of the consistent dedication of our faculty and staff over the years. Likewise, our success has been deeply dependent upon the leadership of my five predecessors, each of whom envisioned a greater purpose for IU Southeast beyond their own tenures. They and others saw the intrinsic value in elevating the university’s position above the level of a community college, and they laid the foundation for IU Southeast to build still further upon its already successful programs. Today, IU Southeast is a vibrant institution offering ever-expanding degree choices, including graduate programs and a solid liberal arts education.

During my first seven months as chancellor, I have enjoyed hearing from many parents, students, alumni and community leaders about how IU Southeast has provided our students with a top-notch, holistic education that has allowed them to be personally and professionally successful. For them, our university not only has been “close to home” but also has served as a true home in an academic and intellectual sense.

Like those who came before us during these 61 years, the faculty, staff and I will continue to be innovative and far-reaching in our endeavor to deliver a high-caliber education to our students based upon sound, comprehensive, long-range strategic planning. In addition, we will find new ways to contribute to the well-being of our local communities and to give support to the many people who have consistently lent this institution their time, effort, deep concern and financial support.

Our “new beginnings” will continue to move forward our long-standing tradition of excellence.
