Rare books of liberty, fraternity and equality on loan to IU East from Remnant Trust

As Indiana University East continues to celebrate 30 years, the Remnant Trust has loaned the university over 40 first and early edition books from its collection to display and use during the spring semester.

The Remnant Trust was created more than a decade ago after Brian Bex, columnist and television commentator, realized that the great classics behind the American political system were often quoted yet seldom seen. The original editions were locked away in archives and vaults, where only those with special reasons could see them. Bex, therefore, began gathering first and early editions writings and began loaning them to institutions, in the hope that individuals will read these works in their original forms, the way they were meant to be read. The public can experience the ideas on which our country was founded, by not only seeing, but also by handling these great works.

Items in the exhibition are currently available for viewing and handling in the library in Hayes Hall on the IU East campus. The exhibition, a powerful collection of manuscripts that focus on liberty, fraternity and equality, are a sample of the more than 400 titles owned by The Remnant Trust, located in Hagerstown.

The exhibition is sponsored in part by the Wayne Bank and Trust Co.
